Well, this time it really looks like it might be the end for us. It won’t be but it sure looks that way. Elon Musk has bought Twitter and it’s kind of all anyone can talk about. Every day there is a new development, in just exactly how the shit is hitting the fan. What little pieces that keep the machine running are being torn away. We’ll have something like it for a while and who knows what that will be? It might be better and more insightful than the thing we had before. Ghost town Tumblr gave us Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss. As long as there are people inhabiting a website, there will be ridiculous new phrases to repeat at each other. Here are the memes we have to show for the past week.
Verification Games
Elon’s big push was to make it possible for anyone to be verified and also try to figure out a way to monetize Twitter via the users. These ideas were bad and the execution was even worse. With decisions made out of our control, we were given a week to do whatever we wanted for the low price of $8 and the understanding that we would probably get banned at the end of it. The world was ours for the taking and it was fun while it lasted. Some were more inspired than others but all were in service to a goal. We were destroying a home we built so a horrible man could not have it, like some kind of prank-filled Disney movie. We won the battle, but the war of ideas rages on.

This was a meme for blue check (the now antiquated slur for unfunny media people) cowards. People who wanted to be included but didn’t want to pay the price. Probably because they couldn’t think of a person to pretend to be. It was not that hard and yet we still needed a secondary meme to appease these people. Total Narc vibes. Twitter needed martyrs and all some could offer was this.
Sir… (George Bush Being Told About 9/11)
A lot of people said that Bush Era satire was only better because of nostalgia. This meme, which has been bubbling under the surface for months, if not years, now, proves that’s not true. 9/11 jokes may be played out but we still remember the very first one, and it still has staying power. All these year later we still find a way to make fun of that moment. I love this meme. It reminds me of childhood and keeps the energy up in a somewhat dour time.

Do your thing 21
Drake released a new album. I know because there's a new meme about him being bizarre. Why on earth would he include this in a song? Is this supposed to sound tough or powerful or bwave? Asking your friend to do something for you because you don’t want to do it yourself? The sad part about this is that there’s not more to it. I wish there were more new things to make fun of Drake for. It’s one of my favorite activities. This is good but there’s only one joke. I want a new one every day.
If You Told Me In January

Sue me for being sincere but I like end-of-year stuff, even if it is a little saccharine and even trauma dumping sometimes. I like to see what everyone was up to. I want to know what happened. It comforts me to know that over the course of a year so much can change. It might all be entirely different by next year, for the better. Let’s hope so!
Ice Spice

There’s a new It girl on the scene. Ice Spice. Some say she’s the closest thing we have to a modern-day princess Diana. I love this because I love to be living in a person’s moment. Remember Olivia Rodrigo? Remember what that felt like? Maybe it’s because I was born under the era of Britney and then lived through the rise of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and so many others that I have a deep love of watching Pop Stars’ careers rise and grow. I’m happy to be here for Ice Spice, especially because I’m always here for a fellow Clarity by Zedd featuring Foxes girl. We have to stick together in this life.
