All food content is aspirational in some way. Hoping that if we eat like the girls making our food we will look like them and be like them. The only thing stopping us from being self actualized is our inability to get up and go to the farmers market. If I eat what these people tell me to eat I will be able to achieve a life similar to theirs. That’s why we all start with Ina Garten. The happy homemaker who has the best olive oil on hand and a wonderful quiet husband who is happy to eat whatever we cook for him. When we realize our shortcomings in both budget and attitude we pair down to the people we can emulate more accurately. With the internet we have exposure to more types of cooking personalities. We are no longer torn between the false Dichotomy of Rachel Ray and Sandra Lee. There are more types of people to be now.

On TikTok especially things seem more achievable. Sure they have a ring light and maybe a microphone but they don’t have a set. They’re not spending hours recipe testing. Sometimes they don’t cook and they order in or go out. In looking for people who’s recipes I want to try, I look for girls who are somewhat aspirational but mostly at my level. I’m not looking to make beef wellington or feed my family of 6 on a budget. I’m looking for girls in their early to mid twenties who sometimes spend too much and make meals that are achievable rather than “good” or “healthy

. I think I have finally found the perfect girl. Brialem. She is a recent college graduate living with her parents in Madison, Wisconsin. She has blonde hair and a soft voice. She buys all her groceries at Trader joes. She eats avocado toast every morning for breakfast and makes her own chipotle bowls as a way of being adventurous. People give her “whacky” (it’s mostly putting goat cheese or hot honey on things) food combinations to try and she does it. I love her content.
