Now that it’s been 2 days, can we admit that this year was less exciting than previous years? There’s barely a whisper of it online anymore, I think I’ll be brave enough to say it was a little lackluster. Not in the theme itself, or even the execution of the theme, but the boundaries provided by the theme. That’s the problem with Menswear.

The exhibit the theme is based on sounds really cool, and I think they made the right choice in sacrificing the dress code for the intellectual content of the exhibit. It is good for almost every part of fashion culture that Black fashion history is being exhalted, studied, and displayed to the public in this manor. That being said, I want to see the beautiful gowns. Something can be good for culture at large, but as a result be not as fun to talk about on the internet.

The complaint every year with the Met Gala, no matter the theme, is that men’s fashion is boring. Most of the men wear regular tuxedos while the women are beautifully adorned in ostentatious gowns. Men in slightly daring suits get praised for standing out from the crowd. Not this year. This year was designed to accelerate what’s possible in the world of red carpet fashion for men. Unfortunately, that means almost everyone is wearing a suit, and everyone wearing a dress is going a little bit off theme, if not ignoring it altogether.
