Debate Twitter
Well, we’ve got another one under our belts. As much as I love communal posting, and believe me, I love it. I hate debate Twitter. As long as Trump is the opponent, it’s hard to watch. It’s like watching a bad improv scene, except it’s two hours and it never changes. We all had some big laughs and some serious head shaking to show we don’t agree but nothing worth repeating happened. At least there’s only two more months of this.
Mama A Girl Behind You
Mama a girl behind you sounds like it should be funny. It seems like a reference that is funny in context and when it’s repeated online. Unfortunately, it’s not. The source is a deeply pixelated video of a kid taking a fit pic for their mom. The kid says mama a girl behind you when the bitmoji behind the mom starts to dance. There’s nothing particularly funny about the kids' delivery or anything remarkable about the video itself. I wish there was more going on in culture right now too. The VMAs are tonight so hopefully that gives us something to talk about.
MJ Lenderman
It’s Manning Fireworks Fall!!! Brat Summer has ended and we need a new idol to be obsessed with. This time it’s white boy of the month MJ Lenderman. It’s been a while since the indie darling getting mainstream accolades was a man but it's a nice change of pace. He brings a fair amount of intrigue because his ex-girlfriend is the lead singer of the band Wednesday, of which he is (was?) a member. As of right now, everything seems copacetic but that can always change. From everything I’ve seen MJ seems like the most normal guy alive so it’ll be fun to see if he can keep that up while we shower him with love and affection.
New Designs
Recently on Twitter, I’ve noticed a nostalgia for these images and their knockoffs. These are by Jason Brooks but he had many imitators, including the discontinued myscene dolls of the early 2000s. They are relics from the early 2000s that have no heir apparent today. I remember these designs fondly and they certainly had a hand in inspiring my jet-set big city lifestyle that I live today. Though I have a soft spot for these images I never knew what they were for. They seemed too intricate to be just advertisements and I don’t know what they’re advertisements for. I don’t know how we could “bring this back” as they say. Where would these images go today? What were they for then? I miss them. I would buy a notebook with them on it.
TikTok
Fashion Week
Fashion Week is a confusing time for all of us on TikTok. Suddenly everyone has an invite to a party you once considered exclusive. Fashion week is how many TikTokers earn their “real celebrity” card. It’s interesting to see who’s face pops up where. Marc Jacobs has been shepherding online virality into IRL fame for a while, but some brands are more selective. Their choice of which lowly straight-to-camera comedian (it’s never the fat girls) they choose to elevate changes the trajectory of what I thought possible for their career. Suddenly these people are elevated to never-before-seen heights. Let’s see what they do with it.
Fiona Apple Remix
Finally, a Fiona Apple Remix that captures the feeling of listening to Fiona Apple. It overwhelms the senses and it hurts. The melancholy releases a kind of joy. The release of admitting how bad it all is. It’s the easiest way to gain accolades among the laypeople in the DJ community but I fall for it every time. I love the Jersey Remixes of all the sad girl songs. I love the Ethel Cain Dancing on my own mash-up. It could be that the glee mash-up still has a hold on me but it could be that these mash-ups tap into a truth. The highest highs and lowest lows can feel the same.
