Alex Jones is finally getting a modicum of what he deserves and at one one of his lowest moments in life, we’re going to make fun of him. HBO Max Presentation
There’s something happening at HBO Max. Last Thursday, there was public Earnings Call to explain exactly what was happening and it left everyone more confused. We were all exposed to a nonsensical Powerpoint that had some great graphics. They were supposed to better explain what was happening and these illustrations illustrated exactly nothing. It reminds me of one of the greatest documents ever to come out of corporate america: The Pepsi Ratio, which explains Pepsi’s marketing strategy and redesign in 2009. Anyone can make a Powerpoint saying whatever they want but after this week, we must ask the question… should they?

The first coherent meme from the new Beyonce album! Anything that’s this kind of powerhouse culturally is due to produce memes but the problem with a Beyonce Album is that it’s dense. It’s like trying to make memes from a book. There’s so much content to be sifted through, that if there’s not a meme-y silly thing that sticks out immediately, it takes a while to comb through it. It took awhile but we finally have one. It’s not saying much or doing anything on its own. It’s a symbol. We all listened to the Beyonce Album and we have something to say about it. That something is…. Unique!

Congratulations to Pete Davidson on becoming the Sarah Paulson of straight men. It’s nice when we come together to give someone a title and recognize them for their newfound place in culture. Pete Davidson has put in the work and gone from the weird kid on SNL who dated Ariana Grande to Hollywood's preeminent MILF lover. Good for him honestly.

Bupdate! (Bama Rush Tok Update!) Rush is in full swing. PNMs are on the row wearing their shirts gifted to them by PanHellenic. I believe today is the first day of the sisterhood round after three days of philanthropy (It is stupid that I know that). There’s not a lot of oomph with the girls rushing this year. They’re more measured in their videos and there’s less pure excitement, which is to be expected. Another thing I’ve noticed is that the girls rushing with small accounts have no videos except their rush videos. The other girls I’m seeing have around 200k followers, and a considerable amount of videos before that. Is that evidence of something? Maybe some kind of mandate from somewhere… I’m not sure. I’ll get back to you.

I do know #BamaRushTok is no longer just about the PNMs rushing at the University of Alabama. #RushTok provides a whole host of perspectives from all over the place. There’s girls who rushed years ago, there’s girls who never rushed giving us play by play, there’s people doing all kinds of discourse from all angles. There are even rumors spreading of an HBO Max documentary trying to follow girls rushing, with girls getting kicked out of houses for being mic’d up. There’s even discourse about the idea of following #BamaRushTok at all. Of course, I believe anyone with a spreadsheet is too invested but I think it’s not crazy to try and make sense of a phenomena that is being played out entirely in, at most, 3 minute videos with snippets of information. Everyone participating wants a piece of the pie.

Even though Work Week ended at Bama last week, other schools are posting their Work Week videos to gain clout. Even though, I believe there is drama to the journey of the PNMs they’re just not giving it this year. Instead the content is coming from seeing the work week themes and dances. I enjoy a little production value I think these coordinated videos in matching outfits are much more entertaining than OOTDs. I think I’m supposed to think that though. The sororities did their job and just when I’m starting to miss the glitz and glam of work week, Georgia Southern, or Auburn, or Texas’s work week has started. I can go from the low effort, low production value videos of PNMs, to high production value, high effort video from the sororities themselves.

This meme is fine. It’s a meme that can invite some real weenies trying to prove they're actually weird and crazy. That never goes over well and always leaves something to be desired. The thing I love is that the original version transitions to Don Toliver’s After Party, my missed connection song of the summer for 2020. The song could have been the soundtrack to many an uber ride to or from the bars. Instead, I listened to it once a week in my apartment and thought about how things used to be different. This sound gives it another chance. I’m happy to see it have that chance.

We do this every couple of months, where we try to weed out the conservatives among us, or assign conservatism to certain behaviors, or admit to engaging in conservative behaviors. After a couple of weeks it gets bogged down in discourse. We say something is conservative when actually it’s just indicative of being southern, or poor. Each time it’s something new and I’m excited to see where this one takes us, especially with ‘Bama Rush going on.

Could this sound be the beginning of the John Mulaney Renaissance? Are we ready to let him back into our hearts? He never left mine but are you all ready to forgive? Regardless, this sound is good because it expresses a new idea, when someone learns to do something and it affects your life. The reaction is not anger, or sadness, or happiness, but confusion and surprise. I didn’t know it knew how to do that. I like when we expand our language.

Here is a meme that is broad and vague and that makes it better. The horse can be anything. It’s announcement is quiet but forceful.
