It’s been a long slow hot summer. Especially on tumblr. The girlies over there have given up the ruse and instead of finding flowery poetic ways to describe the things they love and cherish and consider beautiful, they’re just saying they love them. They’ve lost the need to dress it up as anything else. It’s not literary analysis anymore or some clever turn of phrase. It is just making a list of things they love and saying I love you. It’s not a great meme but I’m happy for everyone doing it. Anyone who’s still an active tumblr user needs to have daily positive affirmations.

Little Miss…

I take back what I said about memes serving capitalism not necessarily always being bad. This one was a nightmare and seems designed to serve capitalism. There’s something about it that really drives everyone crazy and I think this is it. Here’s my guess. The original little miss and mister men are named after their defining characteristic. Little Miss Scatterbrain, Little miss messy, etc. These things are also usually their flaw as a character. There is annoying crossroads of self infantilization, and cutely admitting one’s flaws at play here. Girls you know posting “little miss iced coffee for breakfast” with the “so me” as a caption is infuriating. Trying to make one’s actively bad flaws cute will always be infuriating to an audience. In the same vein so will saying one is little miss iced coffee for breakfast when they are actually little miss vehicular manslaughter. That’s one source of annoyance. Another is that the meme has gone on long enough that it is simply anything anyone wants to say. Little miss going to the store. Little miss going to bed. Little miss geico insurance. It wasn’t saying very much to begin with and it’s saying even less now. Little miss nothing at all.

Uhhh Let Me Be

Now I could wax poetic on the Obama era and political memes and how things have changed and how it seems like we’re doing every era at once right now but I think it would not improve anyone’s understanding of this meme’s place in culture. Obama the meme character and Obama the president are two very different things and when we talk jokingly on the internet about Obama we’re almost always evoking the first one. When Obama appears in memes, he is a similar figure to the Tony Stark pointing meme. Entirely a symbol divorced from the character the way he is represented in fiction. Even though Obama does say let me be clear, this helps to inform the meme, rather than connect the meme to the real person. This most recent iteration of Let Me Be Clear is expanding and playing with the phrase as meme, not playing with Obama, former president. It has nothing to do with the current political climate but rather the fact that it is hot and our brains aren’t firing on all cylinders. 

Me If [x] Was Illegal

They would arrest you if the thing you liked was illegal. That is how that would happen. We’ve done this meme before in a lot of different iterations and also in just regular conversation. It’s not that fun or funny but at least there’s a new spongebob reaction image. If nothing else. 

A Relationship Where Both Of Y’all

You know sometimes they’re right. The people who write the viral tweets that say almost nothing. Sometimes we need a reminder of the simple things. Fuck water is good. Late night talks do hit different on plastic chairs and a relationship where both of y’all funny asf is >>>>>. Sure it’s local. Sure there’s too many tweets that go viral like that. But they’re not wrong. Sometimes when dunking on these people we forget that ultimately they’re right.

This is the worst trend of the summer. Long blocks of text about whatever person in your life you think is special and different. Boy best friends. Roommates. Dads. I’m over it. I’m sick of it. We’re definitely doing moms next and I absolutely don’t care. I don’t come on this app to read about the kooky dads of white girls I don’t know.

Two memes with country songs are going viral this week. This one is better. For a lot of reasons but mostly because the song is better and I do love a meme about a “good time” and the definition of good time changes for every video. Sometimes it’s tequila shots until 4 am and sometimes it’s killing sims. Every time the sound starts I’m ready to learn what kind of good time is being had and even if I personally don’t agree, at least I got to listen to a country banger for a little while.

Disgusting Sound. Disgusting Concept. Keep it to yourself and keep this gross autotune off my For You page. The original version of this song is better and every single iteration of “love” being carried around by the author is disgusting. Whether it’s hair, or a baby, or whatever other refuse falls off your loved ones.

Ok usually I don’t like a story sound. They’re too long and most people aren’t giving a dynamic enough performance to warrant watching for the whole minute plus. This one I will say is a case by case basis. Some people are giving a performance. They’re performing with the choir when they’re talking about their boyfriend or med school or whatever and then making a big show of walking away when they’re done. Then they return to the choir with energy and surprise that makes the rest of the video worth watching. That’s usually clear in the first couple seconds though. Proceed with caution before getting sucked into someone's boring dating history.

A sound that is quickly being used to make fun of girls but it doesn’t have to. Some people who post pictures on their instagram stories need to be made fun of. The people who post grilling zucchini on their close friends for no reason need to be made fun of. People who take selfies in their car. Every couple of years we need to course correct on what kind of angles are good and flattering and what simply make you look silly. The Hoes gon loves this sound is our opportunity to fix the people we love who’s instagram, snapchat, and facebook content bores us to tears.
