Let’s Work it Out On The Remix 

Brat Summer continues!! The Charli XCX Lorde collab on the girl so confusing remix did make the internet go crazy, as predicted. We had to funnel all the energy and excitement of two of our generation defining faves into a meme. If these two can have an awkward and difficult conversation in the remix perhaps there’s hope for the rest of us.

There’s a certain kind of story you can only hear from the voice of someone who has smoked 10,000 cigarettes. It’s so full of details and world building. It moves a mile a minute. The story require you to move with it. Do not ask questions. Let the story unravel itself before you. It’s less a story than a tableau. It does not have a beginning, middle, and end. It pulls you into their lives and just as shoots you back out. After watching 1000 hours of TikTok story times that lack both details and charisma, we are shocked by the cold plunge of a true raconteur. 

When The Hangout Has

Everyone is so boring! Sure we all have preferred forms of hanging out but when it comes to Twitter, I feel we are too antisocial to say the ones we like. For whatever reason, it comes across as limiting. No one ever said “I’m not coming if the hangout doesn’t have expensive coffee drinks.” but it feels implied with this meme. There’s something sinister about this off-brand emoji. He seems to imply that these hangouts are few and far between. It feels less like a celebration of friendship and more a list of demands. 

The World Tour

I don’t want to overstate my influence and impact but that’s exactly what I’m about to do. We all had our laugh last week about the Justin Timberlake DUI and I, in my infinite wisdom, noticed it had the same cadence as an exchange that has become a meme in its own right. The one between Bethenny Frankel and Kelly Bensimone on season 3 of the Real Housewives of New York City. Edit it in instagram, and 90k likes later, here we are. A monster of my own creation

I’m kidding of course. That’s not how memes work and though I may have inspired a couple variations but I’m not claiming responsibility for all the slop that came after my version. Everyone else was just shoehorning the text into their favorite piece of media where they thought it might apply. It never applied.

I’ll say, I did not think I was making an original joke. I was beating Dorinda Deadly to the punch. I was synthesizing two existing memes. In some way it's part of the job description. Someone had to do it. Why not me? Everyone else on the other hand, was failing to improve on the original. Nothing is funnier than the original. Every variation I’ve seen fails to capture the desperation. No one is as pathetic. It seems we can all recognize why “The World Tour” is funny, yet no one seems to be able to apply it elsewhere. The execution lacks understanding.

While old wealthy white women seem to be the cause for many problems in society, more people in charge of policy should imagine themselves trying to explain their stupid idea to someone’s mean grandmother. If you can’t handle explaining your restaurant's policy to Elaine Strich, perhaps your innovation is not as useful as you think.

I love reading everyone’s little creative writing exercises and I’m being serious. We all have the same general idea. It’s the 80s and we’re emotional. Life has gone differently than we expected. Most of these videos are made by people born in the 90s imagining what life in the 80s was like. It is us imaging what we missed. There is something this song awakens in all of us. It’s what we thought adulthood would sound like when we were children. Now we are adults, or are approaching adulthood and we have a better vocabulary to describe this adulthood we never had. Every time I read one of these I feel like I am looking deep into someone's psyche. I see what they took with them from childhood. What parts of the adult world have fascinated them the longest.

Sometimes our wants are so desperate that all we can do is list them out. It’s been incredibly hot outside these past few days and the time for quietly hoping has ended. We all wish things were different. We all have a list of wants ready to go at a moment's notice. Why not publish them? One of them might come true.
