White Lotus
Fun’s over. White Lotus season 3 ended this week leaving us all a little confused and unmoored, just like a bad vacation. I liked some parts of this season and disliked others, making me the most nuanced thinker in America right now. Seconds after the finale, we all took to the internet to dissect symbols that may or may not have been there and get to the bottom of whether this season was good. The star players were good, it all worked out for Belinda, even though “having an awesome time” isn’t that compelling of a narrative, and the reveal that the man who Walton Goggins had been searching for was his father fell flat because we all figured that out weeks ago. The coconut milk has definitely soured after this season, but I think that makes me more excited for next season. Unless they pick a bad location, or I’m not enthused by the cast. Either way, it’s fine.
The Banks Are Out Of Money
Does anyone know what's going on with the economy? I get all my news from Twitter, and it’s not looking good. I can only describe the banks are out of money as the class clown’s contribution to the current landscape. Twitter has mostly rewarded witty retorts and cleverly crafted wordplay over pranks. Even the trolling benefited from well-crafted language. Those were better times. Now, the pranks are classless and simple. That’s all we deserve.
The Rizzler Reveals…
As long as our culture continues to be lowbrow, it will be fun and funny to make it seem highbrow. This only works if those projecting high art know what they are talking about. The Rizzler reveals is an excellent opportunity to get a little highbrow and maybe teach some people some things about the world. However, it’s real esoteric bitches only. The Rizzler revealing his four favorite Billy Wilder movies are basically his IMDb known for? Boring. Throw in a Sabrina at least. The Rizzler is the perfect canvas for our high-brow projections. Who knows? Maybe one day he will be our foremost expert on Goddard?
TikTok
IT’S COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE SEASON
A time-honored TikTok tradition has finally arrived. It’s college acceptance season. It begins with the southern girls at private school decorating their uniforms with ribbons in the color of their matriculated university. They leap into frame and give us their name, chosen SEC school, and the school’s rallying cry. They are having all the fun one is supposed to have when they go to college. They are the standard for having a good time. So much so that the others try to copy them. From here, people will make fun of their accents, decorations, and even their schools, but we all know they want to have as much fun as these girls. We can see the emptiness in their eyes as they say, “and I’m going to Yale! Go Bulldogs!” It just doesn't hit the same as Gig ‘em Ags.
What The Hell
Nothing reflects the current moment better than a song that repeats “what the hell” in various creative forms. What the Helly captures all the bewilderment of What the Hell but puts a fun little spin on it. It’s not all bad, and even if it is, we’re finding a way to keep it light. Every variation that gets us farther from what the Hell is a more fun way to deal with a categorically worse situation. What the hellyon is more fun than what the helly and therefore worse and harder to deal with.
There is something I truly hate about meme culture. It’s acquired weirdness. There is a whole subset of people who are more or less normal but use the language of the internet to make themselves sound weird and/or crazy without being weird and/or crazy. The rest of us have to deal with their vocabularies and their distorted self-image. It’s why we all had to incorporate Chaotic into our vocabulary to describe things that are more or less normal. The people asking for unhinged, diabolical hacks are far from unhinged and diabolical, and also not ready to handle anything unhinged or diabolical. Yet we all must pretend. It’s inoffensive enough to avoid talking about, but do note the rest of us are actively trying not to address it.
