The Oscars
I know this is three days late but I thought the Oscars were fun. It was a good ceremony but nothing special, which is fine considering these past few years I would have called the ceremony less than competent. That’s all I’ll say for now, as I will do a deep dive in tomorrow’s Mean Girl Moment.
Where is Kate Middleton?
Why does everyone feel the need to give a treatise on how much they do or do not like the royals before discussing this? We do this every time. I don't care what Princess Anne is up to but a woman is missing. This has ramped up to previously unforeseen levels of craziness with Buckingham Palace expecting us all to believe that Kate Middleton has begun experimenting with Photoshop. This whole thing is out of control and I need to hear everyone’s theories ASAP. Every time I have settled on something that I think I believe someone comes along with a better theory and I jump on that train. I can be swayed in any direction.
Gay people Are Like She Saved My Life
Why now? Isn’t there enough for terminally online gay guys to talk about right now? Do we need a meme for those who can’t keep up? It feels like my whole feed is gay guys talking about various current events and yet the ones who have no interest in the news or current pop culture are toiling away working on a meme we’ve already done. We don’t need this. We need more people tweeting about how Sandra Huller is mother.
Bene Gesserit Voice/Lisan Al Gaib
We’ve distilled Dune posting down to a couple memes. Now that we’ve collected our thoughts and gotten all the silliness out, we’ve picked two big memes. Obviously, we gravitated towards single expressions. One for any time anything happens and one for whenever you’re talking. It’s why Dune is the perfect franchise. Though it may seem to be about one very specific thing, it’s actually about everything. Any conversation could become a conversation about Dune. As it is written.
TikTok
The Bill to Ban TikTok passed in the House and I, for one, could not be happier. I’ve been saying for months that TikTok is washed. Give it back to China and we will all be better for it. I can finally read the Power Broker with all the brain power I’ll get back. This is good overall for society. I know you will all be sad to no longer learn about the comings and goings of the most brain-dead people alive but I think in the long run it will be good for all of us. C’est la vie.
May Thy Knife Chip And Shatter
Ok back to Dune. TikTok has an attachment to Austin Butler’s line reading of May Thy Knife Chip and Shatter that feels crazy to me. It’s like being in English class all over again. It points to a larger problem in our culture where people can’t identify when things are weird on purpose or as part of the text. The people who think Feyd Rautha is in love with Paul are actually interpreting the reading but those people think everyone is in love with everyone. It’s the easiest analysis to do. The other half of people reacting to this line have almost nothing more to say than he was being weird or he messed it up in some way. If you can’t take this seriously, you can go back to Marvel.

This is a really funny TikTok sound but not a great song. It’s the final boss of a cultural shift. The TikTok music makers who are going for a good clip to sell their music have cut to the chase and made a funny sound disguised as a song. It’s the end of something and the beginning of something. We’re no longer wasting time trying to build something organically or with a hint of subtlety. Everyone just go do whatever they want. Get those streams somehow.
