I published my year end retrospective yesterday because I believe the new year doesn’t start until after my birthday (January 31st), so in my world I was early. Here it is ICYMI.

Every single day the people of Chicago get online and try to prove to us that they live in the third greatest city in america. They defend their oddities and their weirdness and present them to us to show off how special and different they are. This time I am unamused. The only cool and fun person involved in this whole thing is the woman who removed the cement and remade the rat hole. She’s a hero. The rest of you are hangers on.

Another week, another opportunity for people with insecure attachment styles to create little tests for their boyfriends who don’t love them. What these women really want is for their boyfriends to perform these actions naturally, and because they don’t, the rest of us are forced to watch them have meltdowns about love and the nature of tenderness. It’s so boring and I hate being an unwilling participant in a survey of thousands of peoples relationships. These kinds of riddles only exist to create doubt, and if you have to ask the question, you’ve already lost. Don’t make the rest of us participate in the charade of wondering what it all could mean.
Doll With The Knowing Smile
Mid Winter Madness. It’s been snowing too long and everyone is losing their mind. The doll getting popular is a collective decision to start peeling at the yellow wallpaper. I don’t believe she’s real and that anyone has any memories of playing with or owning the doll as a child but I believe that because I need to. It looks like something familiar but I have never seen this doll in my life and I can’t believe any of you have either.

The beginning of the 2024 Hard Vibe Shift I asked for. No more clean girl. No more trad wives. No more fashion inspired by childhood. Mob Wife is the beginning of the new reality. We are glamourising older women who are aspirationally upper middle class. Their lives are difficult and the money doesn’t come without a price. They are almost definitely getting cheated on and their husband loves them in a way many don’t understand. The Mob Wife is the return of difficult women and strong female characters. We’re ready for complexity and nuance again. Or it’s winter and we just want to wear fur.

More Midwinter madness. It’s late January and we’re all starting to remember why we love Grimes so much. We get how the cold Quebec winters made a person like that and why in 2012 that seemed cool and fun to us. Forget everything that happened after. She’s still a little funny sometimes and Oblivion is still a good song.
Once again evidence of the intellectual decline of TikTok. We’re getting lazier and lazier with how we express these ideas. We’re just rewriting the same thing and adding emojis to show that our perspective has changed? That’s it? That’s all we got? Nothing is novel anymore and we’ve lost interest in trying to have an interesting take. The lifestyle girlies are cooked. We used to put effort into romanticizing our lives and now we just add emojis.
