M3GAN
First Meme Movie of the year! Where other films leave us wondering how they manage to captivate an online audience, M3GAN is self-explanatory. It already has a leg up as horror as a genre lends itself to memes—the inherent humor in the abject and all that. M3GAN is no ordinary Blumhouse January release, though. M3GAN has been highly anticipated since the trailer dropped last fall. So far, she is living up to expectations. The premise of a robot doll who becomes evil is enough on its own, but that’s not enough to make it a Gay Twitter masterpiece. To truly reach icon status, this movie added the penny nickel dime girl, a team of dancers who appear in the real world seemingly at random, and the return to the silver screen for Queen Allison Williams, aka THEE Marnie Marie Michaels. What’s not to love?

How Is [x] The Cheapest One
Someone said, “Tweet as if Pokemon were real” and now we’re here. Every so often, we like to play pretend with Twitter which I do think is fun. A little bit of a creative writing exercise to start off the new year. Fun! From there, we got this third option Uber meme. This meme is inoffensive and because there’s only a couple of them I have no quarrel with it . That doesn’t mean it’s good. It helps to pad out the regurgitated content part of the internet during a somewhat slow period. Sometimes 2 and a half stars is all you have to work with.
Norman Rockwell's Freedom of Speech
Norman Fucking Rockwell!! Often a work of art becomes a part of the meme canon. If the story or character is there, we can add to or play with the inherent silliness. We’ve done it before with Saturn devouring his Son, but that became played out and for commoners or Art History nerds who thought they were the only ones to get the reference of what had become a very internet-famous painting. Freedom of Speech has been canonized because, like almost all Norman Rockwell, it is now absurd to picture in the context of modern American life. Men don’t look or act like that anymore. Even if they did, there is no glamour for them anymore, only news camera lighting and ugly clothes. We take the art and make it modern. We edit it in Photoshop, color it in with Instagram, and give him a little makeover to better understand the subject. And so, with enough edits, Freedom of Speech becomes ours, and the figure in it the painting is a malleable man, a muse for whatever artiste wants him next.

Playing This For The Person That Only Likes Country and Rap
It’s a trope that is so old that it already had a meme in the old colored background/impact font days. We all know about “I like everything but country and rap,” but I thought we all grew up and realized, even if it were true, not to say things like this. Maybe we did, and this is just a straw man we brought back just to let everyone know we have weird music taste. As with anything with music, there is an ongoing underground competition here of who listens to the most obscure music. There’s never a winner, only those who reveal themselves to be Musically oblivious 8th graders who think Fleetwood Mac is indie and underground. I did not see the original TikTok, but someone said they saw one where the music chosen was Jazz. While Jazz may be off-putting to some, we can always go weirder. The most obscure is never won by music nerds but by actual nerds who listen to folk and/or religious music from a culture they’re not a part of or fandom songs. Neither of these is really the fun answer, so we all keep playing as if the game has no winners.
No Matter Where You Are, Everyone Is Always Connected
I love these when they’re good. When through some inexplicable coincidence, the people we love have always been orbiting around us. They have crossed oceans of time to find us. It’s fun to believe in serendipity and fate and all the things that send a tingle up your spine. However, sometimes these are just people who go to the same college and were freshmen at the same time, ending up in the background of photos. That’s fun and cute for you but well within the realm of possibility. It’s just right place, right time, not cosmic connection. Anything that’s people who know the same people becoming friends in a different state is incredibly boring and kind of predictable. Middle-class (and above) people meeting each other at various colleges across the country is something that happens literally every day.
You Know What It Never Was? That Serious

A good trend that reminds us to calm down sometimes. Some people are annoying because they can’t recognize when it wasn’t that serious and when it was. Some people are showing genuine growth and their ability to get over it, which we should all work on.
Dupe!

A dupe is a well-known term in the world of fashion and especially cosmetics. It is a cheaper version of an expensive product that either does the job just as well or looks just as good. This trend is about celebrating the Dupes in our everyday life. It’s so easy to be glamorous each day if we convince ourselves our cheap knockoffs are actually secret recreations of high-class items. With “The Dupe Mindset” everything expensive is cheap and within reach. Or in the words of a brilliant cultural critic I’m now forgetting: “It’s not an Aritzia dupe, it’s just a black long sleeve t-shirt. Everyone has those.”
I never said they weren’t! The meme started with Pokémon!
