Halloween Memes
Last week I said we were trudging towards halloween and this is further evidence to my point. Although this is proof that even as we trudge, we are capable of being creative. At first I thought this was an extension of spooky season bullshit. After seeing more contributions to these meme, I’ve realized everyone is being stupid in the fun way. There are many ways to approach Halloween and with the death of spooky season, we’re allowing other people to show their love for the holiday. This approach is not from those who love thrills and chills but from the silly people who love Halloween. We forget that Halloween also has an aesthetic sensibility that is geared toward children and when deployed correctly is just as enjoyable, if not more so, than the versions that intended to scare.
Hawk Tuah
Well girls and gays, I think we won the war over Hawk Tuah. What was once forced upon us as an extension of the Man on the Street industrial complex is firmly ours. Haliey Welch is our girl and as long as she is beloved semi-ironically she has power. It’s a symbiotic relationship that we’re happy to participate in now that we’ve claimed her for our team. We outlasted the others and now its our turn to play. Her 15 minutes will be extended as long as we can keep her on our side. Like I said in August, median voter vibes. We’ll see how much fun we’re all having in November.

This meme existed in text and image form long before it hit TikTok. What I always found interesting is that the author is in power when it comes to their desirability. More often than not, memes about hook up culture come from a place of pleading, begging to be desired. Social Media is designed to prey on our insecurities and make us feel less than, and most importantly undesired. Its an easy position to take, as most of us spending our time wondering “Do they like me?” This format asks what would you do if you knew they liked you? If you made it as far as them getting naked in your house? Now, that the desire is clear, You can get what you really want instead. That being said after scrolling through this sound on TikTok for an hour the things you guys want to talk about are lame and boring.
Wait They Dont Love You Like I Love You

Every generation must come to Maps in their own way. I remember what it felt like to download it onto my iPod when I was 12. For this generation, they have their TikTok dance. The dance captures the emotion of the song well and spreads the gospel of Maps, which is of course wait, they don’t love you like I love you. The Indie kids want to participate in the mainstream in their own special way and this dance satisfies that need.

The Girls Rewatch Podcast has finished Girls HBO and moved on to Broad City. With their choice we get a revival of our favorite Abbi and Ilana moments as TikTok sounds. It is both the obvious next choice and a brave one. I thought we weren’t ready for Broad City revivalism. I thought we couldn’t revisit it for another 5 years at least. It’s star burned too bright too quickly. But they’re right. It’s time to bring Broad City back to culture. Maybe it’s better than we remember. This is the beginning of a cultural conversation that ends with the question Are We Ready to Forgive the Hillary Episode?
