Kamala Harris Coconut tree
I’m still not all in on the Kamala Harris kooky vice president train. I was all in in 2012 when we tried to do it with Joe Biden and now look where we are. However, when she’s good, she’s good, and we’re even better. The Coconut Tree clip is her best work yet. I needed more than laughter from her and I finally got it. I love an incoherent metaphor and false poetry. Every politician wants their great speech that gets on A to Z quotes dot com and she’s so close to getting hers (but not for the right reasons). I love the delivery here and how it allows for memes. We can replace her speech with our nonsense, and now it reads as believable. Great Work, Mrs. Vice President. Keep it up.
House Speaker
We lost the House of Representatives long ago. It is not so much a branch of government anymore but an immersive theater experience with an ever-changing cast of stock characters. This week we’ve had a bumbling drama devoted to finding a house speaker with an entertaining B-plot helmed by George Santos. We’ve been dusting off the old memes and remembering what it was like to be consumed by the inner machinations of government—a kind of dry run for next year. My favorite part has been watching everyone go after Elise Stefanik. Her district includes Northern New York, whom Vermont shares local news stations with, so as long as she’s been running, I’ve been forced to endure her horrible campaign ads. I hate her for all the other reasons we hate republicans but with her, it’s personal.

Would We Be Friends In Every Universe?

I hate this. It feels so generic to ask if you would be friends in every universe and to only pull from TV shows. You’re always the main character and their best friend? The choices people make aren’t interesting enough or similar enough to say anything about the nature of their friendship. No one has the creativity to say that two girls would have a Joey/Chandler-type friendship rather than a Rachel/Monica, and that’s not even that clever! My understanding of your friendship is that you guys are simply the best, which is great for you but not really that interesting to the rest of us. Most content about friendship has something illuminating to say about the somewhat under-discussed relationships in our lives that also make them worth living. These slideshows just show me that you have friends. Awesome!
Me and The Devil
I love the spirit of this more than the execution. The theory of this trend pairs well with its song choice better than most have in a while. This is the devil you choose to walk hand in hand with. It is not the bane of your existence but your evil companion. Of course, the most popular videos under this sound are the ones that choose an alcoholic beverage. That is the most obvious way to get at the devil you choose. The choice you make over and over again, that makes everything worse. Others choose to do the devil they’re stuck with, like a mildly annoying medical condition or software they are forced to use to pursue their dreams. I think that misses the complexities of the trend. Unfortunately, the frat boys have the nerds beat on understanding nuance and applying it to their own lives in this instance.
