Well, I’ve done it. For the first time in my life, I have seen all of the best picture nominees. What has been my goal since I was 15 has finally been accomplished. Usually, there are one or two films that I haven’t seen that I skip because I simply didn’t have time or felt I understood what they were going for. Infamously, I tried to watch Drive My Car at least 5 times that year, and every time I decided I would try again at a more optimal time, that simply never came. This Yea,r I’ve done I,t though. Finally, at 28, I can call myself a real Oscar Watcher instead of a casual viewer. Here are my thoughts on all of the Movies.
This is a post-strike year. There are movies missing from this lineup and films that were not able to come out because of the strike. Similar to the COVID shut downs, there is a big what-if looming here. I can’t help but feel that there are some indie darlings and even studio releases that would have easily slotted into this lineup. Better entertainment journalists than me (I’m not a journalist) could tell you exactly which ones. All I can tell you is that the vibe is off this year and that’s exactly why. I’m just an artist/cultural critic who can’t help but feel the ache brought on by a labor crisis and the studios’ cold shoulder to creatives in response.
