This week one of the best television shows ever written drew to a close. While we all know that a show’s end does not mean an end to the memes, it does mean that we’ve been given all we will ever be given to work with. The content factory has closed. We have all the text, now all there is left to create is subtext. Go crazy.
This show has generated a lot of content and a lot of people have talked about how and why, including myself. As always, many are concerned with the why, and the implications, but I’m more concerned with are they good? The answer of course is, it varies. Sucession memes fall into a couple different categories. Some are artful videos that deepend the understanding of the text. Some are heavily edited images that only make sense (and are only funny) with the context of the show. Some are silly little tweets. Each category has it’s merits and stand outs. No medium in the world of succesion memes is categorically bad.
My personal determination for whether a Succesion meme is good or bad, depends on if I can tell the person making it doesn’t understand the show. There’s been a lot of hand wringing over whether people are being serious about their Kendall Roy babygirl edits or if some of us watching know we’re not supposed to be “rooting” for the characters. I personally don’t care about that angle. I like when someone is being silly about the show from an interesting perspective, that’s really all I ask.
