Last week, someone posted a tweet about phrases from the internet that sound like they’re from the Bible, Shakespeare, or Paradise Lost. People posted their ideas, others got mad, and still others posted the reverse: old quotes that sound like they originated from the Internet. As is the cycle of Twitter discourse.

My beef with this line of questioning is not the idea itself, but that it is just an old Tumblr post from 2014. There is just something so horrifying to me about rewriting a Tumblr post and trying to pass it off as your idea. It’s one thing to do it in person, where someone might not figure you out right away. It’s another thing to do it online. Sure, you’re taking it from one social media site to another and waiting a few years in the hopes that you could launder this idea as your own but come on. It’s the internet. Most former active Tumblr users are current active Twitter users.
