It wouldn’t be the Oscars if we didn’t have a couple days of discourse—the after-party for those of us that don’t get invited to the after party. I love discourse. I love fighting, and most importantly, I love fighting about movies. The social media website formerly known as Twitter has gotten worse in the past 3 years. A lot of the people who made the site good have left, and a lot of horrible people have stayed. Half of the fun now is sifting through the bullshit, the other half is fighting. The fighting has gotten harder and dumber, but there are enough intellectuals left that it’s still worth it.
The problem with fighting about Anora is that it involves fighting about film criticism and feminism. Not that the internet is good with any sensitive topics, but film criticism and feminism are non-starters. Film is a populist medium, so the average citizen is convinced their thoughts matter as much as those who have developed critical thinking skills. That’s not even considering the people who are film professionals. Which also doesn’t even factor in that none of that matters, and anyone up and down the board could have a Bad Opinion, or this one is rarer, a good one.
As always, there are about 4 sides to this discourse. The two that are most concerning to me are the loudest and the dumbest. The first is the “feminist”
